When you speak, you change the universe. This work makes it easier to appreciate that. Words are like stepping stones that we build one on top of the other—the basis of what we say now are the roots of our future… Fractal, recursive—being infinite, where do you want to start?
- Role: Solo: concept, interaction design, Max/MSP programming & sound design.
- Stack: Max/MSP, real-time audio amplitude analysis.
- Context: Commissioned by the Municipal Gallery of Querétaro for the exhibition “Génesis” (Oct. 2023). Featured on CreativeApplications.net.
Voz y Movimiento is an interactive sound installation built to make a single idea physical: that vocal expression is reciprocal, and that meaning only stays alive while we keep contributing to it.
The core interaction is deliberately demanding. Using Max/MSP, I built a system that listens to the room’s vocal amplitude in real time and, in response, reveals a pre-recorded, personalized message. The catch —and the design decision the whole piece rests on— is that the message only keeps playing as long as people keep speaking. Fall silent, and it stops. Participation isn’t optional or decorative; it’s the literal mechanism that sustains the work.
That constraint turns passive spectators into active, mutually-dependent participants. To hear the piece through, a group has to keep each other going— a small, embodied rehearsal of the idea that emergent meaning is collective and has to be reinforced to survive. The technical brief and the conceptual thesis are the same brief.
The piece was commissioned by the Municipal Gallery of Querétaro for Génesis —origin, beginning, creation, birth— and opened on October 12, 2023, alongside other local and international artists. It was later featured on CreativeApplications.net, which also contains the hidden message from Zhuangzi.
